Success story of Rebokon Barangay Food Terminal Award

From rice, meat, fish, vegetables, spices, rootcrops and even charcoal, name it, the Barangay Food Terminal (BFT) of Rebokon has it.

BFT Rebokon is LGU-operated serving 690 households and seven catchment barangays

Rebokon is the biggest barangay of Dumalinao, Zamboanga del Sur with an IRA of P1.6M.  It is a coastal barangay but more accessible by land through habal-habal, jeepney or van passing through rough roads.  With BFT here has helped residents a lot because they no longer travel to at least 14  kilometers to the town proper or as far as Pagadian City to buy rice and other basic needs.

On May 7, 2009, Department of Agriculture Regional Office 9 through the Agribusiness Marketing Assistance Division opened the Rebokon BFT formerly known as Barangay Bagsakan Project.  It was equipped with cold storage and store facilities for the Barangay Council to operate.   Punong Barangay Evangeline Santillan was then the store manager.

With some P27-T startup capital,  BFT Rebokon exhibited an excellent performance as basis for the release of the P50-T additional capital from DA on Jan. 26, 2010.

In fact, in a span of nine months of operation,   BFT Rebokon posted a gross sales of P2,072,356.80 with a net income of P172,947.90 for the period January to September 2010.

Until the conduct of 2010 Barangay Election and a new set of Barangay Council had to take over the operation of BFT.

December 1, 2010 when Punong Barangay Petrocenio Ancajas' Council was at the helm of the Barangay Food Terminal.   Ancajas acted as the store manager and designated Barangay Kagawad Saturnina Sambilad as his Assistant Store Manager.

Despite the transition period, the BFT's operation remains liquid.  While selling fresh, safe and nutritious food to barangay people, BFT management has to establish an assured and sustainable income.   All those receiving honoraria from the barangay are given credit line at the BFT.  The rest of the residents are also given credit limit of P200 a month.

During pay day, Barangay Treasurer Bel Jumawan automatically deducts payment for all the items they got from BFT.

The Management also hires two store keepers to man the BFT in the person of Catherine Maghanoy and Betty Pedroso.  To encourage Cathy and Betty to tender good service, the Management gives them 30 percent share of the net income.

Under this scheme, Cathy and Betty are receiving an average of P3,600 a month and it is increasing.  This rate is comparable to what sales attendants of department stores in the city are receiving today.

A matter of fact, for the first three months (December 2010 to February 2011), Cathy and Betty were able to raise P464,504.94 gross sales and they shared P10,933.56 each.

Following the 3-year term of office of Rebokon Barangay Council, the BFT has more than two years to earn thousands while 10 percent of its net income also goes to the coffers of the barangay.  Muchmore, BFT is seen to employ not only two but more people to handle other business ventures.

Having projected possible business opportunities of the BFT, Assistant Manager Sambilad is optimistic to expand market linkages with other BFTs in the region and become a barangay consolidator of different agri-fishery products like banana and fish which are abundant in the area. # (remai s. alejado/da9)
